While the payments industry continues to advance with innovations such as QR code payments, government benefit payment cards, real-time payments, payment-based promotions, and the emerging potential of cryptocurrency—each with its own unique set of requirements—one critical dimension remains underrepresented in innovation conversations: merchant acceptance at the point of sale. This presentation explores the often-overlooked “other side” of payment innovation—the technical and operational realities that determine how quickly and widely new payment types are adopted by merchants.

Drawing from real-world retail implementation experiences, this session will offer a grounded view into the retail payments ecosystem, including the evolving role of the POS platform in enabling merchant adoption.

Uniquely, this talk will frame payment innovation through the lens of merchant implementation and technical integration, and will conclude by asking: Is there a better way to achieve more rapid adoption of payment innovations?

About the Presenter

Guy Berg

Guy has dedicated his career to advancing technology innovation and adoption within the payment’s ecosystem. Early in his career, his work supported the global adoption of contact and contactless EMV cards, including developing chip card key management and programming solutions for card issuance, as well as consulting for mobile and contactless technologies. With expertise spanning both EMV card issuance and merchant payment acceptance, Guy offers a rare full-lifecycle perspective on payment technology. His experience extends to guiding merchants and acquirers through the technical and operational complexities of acceptance, making his insights invaluable for aligning innovation with real-world needs.

As part of the Federal Reserve’s Payment Improvement team, Guy and his team led efforts to assess B2B payment modernization needs, conducted research on the role of standards in supporting emerging payment technologies, and led the Federal Reserve’s engagement with ASC X9. These efforts included developing an innovative e-invoice and remittance exchange framework that addressed critical industry needs. Now serving as SVP of SKUPay at SKUx, Guy continues to innovate, focusing on resolving merchant challenges with accepting healthy benefit cards and introducing the new concept of payment-based promotions.
