U.S. Payments Study Group

Overview

The U.S. Payments Study Group serves as a resource for X9 members to understand and track the wide range of payment methods used in the United States. The group will:

—Research, compile, maintain, and regularly update a comprehensive Handbook of U.S. Payment Types and Uses, covering traditional, emerging, and alternative payment methods.

—Research and document the characteristics, operational models, regulatory frameworks, risks, and adoption trends of major payment systems and instruments (e.g., checks, cards, ACH, wires, P2P, crypto, stablecoins, faster payments, ISO 20022-based systems, QR payments, tokenization, digital currencies, chain of custody, portability, AML:/FATF, Genius Act, related ISO standards and other relevant mechanisms).

—Provide ongoing analysis of innovations in payments and evolving practices, ensuring that the handbook remains current and relevant over time.

—Identify potential gaps or industry needs where X9 could consider the development of standards, recommended practices, or guidance, and report such opportunities to the X9 Payments Subcommittee (X9A) and the X9 Board.

This group is focused on research, education, and knowledge-sharing, with its primary deliverable being the X9 Handbook of U.S. Payment Types and Uses, which will be updated on a recurring basis to reflect developments in the payments landscape.
