FedNowSM Service and Instant Payments in the U.S.:

What’s Ahead from the Federal Reserve

Overview

In August 2019, the Federal Reserve announced its decision to build a 24x7x365 real-time gross settlement service for instant payments – the FedNowSM Service – by 2023 or 2024. This represents history in the making by helping achieve the industry objective for ubiquitous faster payments in the United States. Enabling broad adoption of instant payments has widespread implications for financial institutions, the payment industry and business leaders alike. For financial professionals, 2020 will be a pivotal year for setting the stage for instant payments given the typical industry decision cycle – evaluate, decide, budget, prepare, implement – averages two years. In this session, Federal Reserve executives will discuss the latest developments in building the FedNowSM Service, how industry stakeholders are informing the process, and steps your organization can take to prepare for and embrace this exciting new payment innovation.
